Denver Sister Cities International’s Axum Committee is pleased to share encouraging news from Adiet Semema Primary Hospital, where newly procured medical supplies and equipment are now supporting patient care and hospital operations.
In October 2024, committee member Axum Teklu, whose leadership had already been instrumental in fundraising efforts for Kidiste Mariam Hospital during 2023–24, approached the Axum Committee with a new request: assistance for a nearby hospital in Semema, the hometown of her father, committee member Yihdego Abai.
Like many medical and educational institutions across Tigray Region, Adiet Semema Primary Hospital suffered major losses during the conflict from 2020 to 2022. One immediate need was simple but essential: replacing an industrial washer and dryer that had been looted. Reliable laundry systems are fundamental to any functioning hospital, ensuring patients have clean bed linens and that doctors, nurses, and staff can work in hygienic conditions with freshly laundered scrubs and uniforms.
Funds were transferred quickly, and procurement began—no small task in a region still navigating post-conflict recovery. Through careful planning and resourcefulness, local partners were able to stretch every dollar, or more accurately, every Ethiopian birr, far beyond the original request.
What began as support for laundry equipment became a broader investment in lifesaving care. The hospital ultimately acquired a wide range of urgently needed equipment, including:
- compound microscope
- digital centrifuge
- ultrasound machine
- wheelchairs
- suction machine
- delivery couch
- automatic and manual laundry machines
- additional essential clinical equipment
The hospital staff and the development association expressed deep gratitude for the partnership and support that made this possible—thanking those who helped raise funds, assess priorities, and secure the equipment where it was needed most.
The Axum Committee especially recognizes Axum Teklu for identifying the need and helping lead the fundraising effort. This is the kind of partnership that reflects the true spirit of sister cities: practical support, trusted relationships, and action that directly improves lives ❤️🌍
The committee believes these contributions will have lasting impact—and that lives will be saved because of them.
