Ashenda 2025 at the City of Axum Park was the perfect event for DSCI Axum to announce its new challenge of raising funds in support of the Aksum University Comprehensive Hospital and Kidiste Mariam/St. Mary’s Hospital in Axum. We contracted with an assessor from Project C.U.R.E. who verified what we already knew, the hospitals greatly need our support. We are grateful to Axum committee member, Yidego Abai, for serving as goodwill ambassador and introducing Dr. Tewodros Haile (AKU Comprehensive Hospital, Black Lion, Denver Health, University of Colorado) to potential supporters. We have already been approached by several interested supporters including, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. It is time to pass the torch to a new generation.
DSCI Axum committee sponsored a booth at the event. In a theme promoting medical supplies, we set up a table which included a “patient” and a toy first aid kit complete with stethoscope, injection needle, and blood pressure monitor, all of which were popular with the Ashenda girls. Upon hearing about the fundraising campaign for the hospitals in Axum, one of the girls donated $5.00 of her Ashenda money for the cause. We were all very moved by her generosity.

During our silent phase prior to the kickoff we have raised $13,000 of a $45,000 goal, sufficient to ship a container of medical supplies valued at up to $450,000 door-to-door to Axum and the costs for the assessor.
