A Landmark Conference in Global Collaboration
In early November, Denver became a hub for international dialogue, academic exchange, and community connection during Under Shared Blue Skies: Mongolia and the North American West, a three-day conference held November 7–9, 2025. The conference brought together scholars, policymakers, artists, students, and community members to explore shared landscapes, cultures, and futures across Mongolia and the North American West.
Organized collaboratively by Metropolitan State University of Denver, the American Center for Mongolian Studies, Denver Sister Cities International, and the Honorary Consul of Mongolia, the conference reflected the power of partnership in advancing people-to-people diplomacy. The event was further strengthened by the support of 14 sponsors, 12 supporting organizations, and nearly 200 registered attendees from across the United States and Mongolia.
A Program Rich in Scope and Substance
Over the course of the conference, participants engaged in more than 50 presentations, representing 25 universities from both countries, along with numerous community organizations and cultural associations . The interdisciplinary program addressed themes ranging from land stewardship and environmental change to culture, education, language, migration, and democratic movements.
The conference opened with a private reception hosted by the Denver Botanic Gardens, setting a welcoming tone for the days ahead. Conference sessions followed at multiple locations, including Denver Water, Auraria Campus, and Aurora, creating space for academic panels, artistic displays, poster sessions, and community storytelling.
Highlights included:
- Interdisciplinary panels on conservation, sustainability, and rangeland management
- Sessions connecting traditional practices with modern environmental challenges
- Cultural and artistic presentations, including work by Mongolian artist Bolor Lkhaajav
- Musical performances by the Ajnai Morin Khuur Ensemble
- A powerful photographic exhibit on the Mongolian Democratic Revolution
International Voices and Cultural Exchange
The conference welcomed distinguished international guests, including Undraa Agvaanluvsan, Member of the Ikh Khural (Parliament of Mongolia), and representatives from the Embassy of Mongolia, reinforcing the importance of cultural diplomacy at both civic and national levels .
By bringing together international presenters, students, and local community members, Under Shared Blue Skies created a rare opportunity for dialogue that crossed borders, disciplines, and generations.
A Reflection of Sister City Values
For Denver Sister Cities International, the conference exemplified the organization’s mission in action. It demonstrated how sustained relationships — such as Denver’s sister city connection with Ulaanbaatar — can evolve into meaningful platforms for education, collaboration, and mutual understanding.
As Honorary Consul of Mongolia James F. Wagenlander noted, the conference’s success was reflected not only in its scale, but in the depth of engagement and the relationships formed during the event. A post-conference overview prepared by Janice Pugh-Wohler captured the remarkable breadth of participation and collaboration that made the conference possible .
Looking Ahead
Under Shared Blue Skies stands as a testament to what is possible when academic institutions, cultural organizations, and civic partners come together with a shared vision. It reinforced Denver’s role as a place where global conversations are welcomed — and where international partnerships continue to thrive.
Denver Sister Cities International is proud to have been part of this landmark event and looks forward to building on the connections, ideas, and collaborations sparked under our shared blue skies.
