For nearly nine centuries, the people of Potenza, Italy, have gathered each spring to celebrate one of the city’s most cherished traditions—the Festival of Saint Gerardo and the Defeat of the Turks. Rich in history, pageantry, folklore, and civic pride, the festival is one of southern Italy’s defining cultural events and offers a remarkable glimpse into the heritage that continues to shape Denver’s Sister City.
This year’s celebration was especially meaningful for Denver Sister Cities International, as Potenza Committee Chair Pietro Simonetti was in Potenza during the festivities. His visit provided an opportunity not only to experience one of the city’s most important annual traditions, but also to strengthen the personal relationships that are at the heart of the Denver–Potenza Sister City partnership.
Held annually on May 29 and 30, the festival honors Saint Gerardo, Potenza’s patron saint, whose legacy has been woven into the city’s identity for generations. Today, the celebration has become much more than a historical remembrance—it is a vibrant expression of Potenza’s community spirit, traditions, and enduring pride in its history.
The festival’s signature event is the Parata dei Turchi (“Parade of the Turks”), an extraordinary historical procession that winds through the streets of the city on the evening of May 29. According to local tradition, Potenza was once threatened by a Turkish invasion, but Saint Gerardo was believed to have protected the city. While historians generally regard the story as legend rather than documented history, it remains a powerful symbol of resilience and local identity.
More than one thousand participants take part in the procession, wearing elaborate costumes representing nobles, knights, soldiers, Turkish warriors, musicians, clergy, artisans, and townspeople. The parade recreates scenes from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the nineteenth century, transforming the streets of Potenza into a living history lesson that celebrates the city’s rich cultural heritage.
One of the festival’s most recognizable traditions is the Iaccara—a towering torch-like structure made from reeds and wood. Carried through the city by volunteers before being ceremonially lit, the Iaccara has become an enduring symbol of Potenza’s shared history and community traditions, drawing thousands of spectators each year.
The celebration concludes on May 30 with traditional ceremonies and a procession through Potenza’s historic center, where residents and visitors gather to honor a tradition that has connected generations of Potenza families for centuries.
For Denver Sister Cities International, experiences like these remind us that the true value of a Sister City relationship extends far beyond official visits. They provide opportunities to experience another culture not as tourists, but as welcomed friends—sharing traditions, learning from one another, and building relationships that endure across generations.
Those connections are already making a difference. Last year, the Potenza Committee provided full scholarships for six Denver students to participate in an exchange with Potenza. Living with host families, exploring southern Italy’s history and culture, and developing lifelong friendships, these students experienced firsthand the warmth and hospitality that define the Potenza community.
Events like the Festival of Saint Gerardo help preserve the traditions that exchange students encounter and remind us why international partnerships matter. They allow us to celebrate not only what makes each community unique, but also the shared values of family, community, hospitality, and cultural understanding that unite us.
As Pietro returns to Colorado, he brings with him new stories, fresh perspectives, and renewed inspiration for future exchanges between our two cities. Through every visit, student exchange, cultural celebration, and friendship formed, the Denver–Potenza Sister City relationship continues to grow—one connection at a time.
