Denver Sister Cities International shares this upcoming community event as part of our commitment to international understanding, civic connection, and support for communities whose histories continue to shape global dialogue today. Members are invited to attend and learn more about how Denver’s international communities are commemorating this important anniversary.

DENVER, CO — Community leaders, cultural organizations, and advocates will gather in Denver on Sunday, April 26, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, honoring the victims and drawing connections to Ukraine’s ongoing resilience and defense.

The day begins at 1:30 p.m. with a public outdoor commemoration at Cheesman Park, near the memorial bench installed in fall 1986. The event is organized by the Denver Branch of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America.

A film program follows at the Buell Public Media Center (2101 Arapahoe St.) beginning at 3:45 p.m. Doors open at 3:00 p.m.

Freedom Under Fire — Ukraine in Three Films includes:

• HBO’s Chernobyl (2019, Episode 1)

Children in the Fire (2025), a documentary by Evgeny Afineevsky (Colorado premiere)

Ukraine Under Fire (2025), by Colorado filmmaker Jordan Campbell, who will speak following the screening

“These screenings offer a rare opportunity to connect the historical legacy of Chernobyl with the realities Ukraine faces today,” said Marina Dubrova, president of Ukrainians of Colorado.
