Meet the Denver–Potenza Sister City Committee at Italian Heritage Day on October 3

October is Italian Heritage Month, and the Denver–Potenza Sister City Committee is kicking off the celebration by joining Italian organizations from across the Denver area for Italian Heritage Day at the Sons & Daughters of Italy Denver Lodge on Saturday, October 3.

The event runs from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at 5925 W. 32nd Ave. in Wheat Ridge, with music and entertainment, Italian food and refreshments, Italian goods and, perhaps most importantly, a chance to meet many of the organizations keeping Italian culture and connections thriving in Colorado.

Denver Sister Cities International’s Potenza Committee will be there, too. Committee member Anissa Madrill will be hosting the DSCI table, and she has a particular invitation for anyone who stops by: come learn about Potenza, meet the committee and find out how you might become part of the relationship.

There Are Lots of Ways to Get Involved

The Potenza Committee is growing, and we’re looking for people who would like to help shape what comes next. That might mean volunteering at an event, helping with cultural programming, joining the committee or simply lending your particular skills when they’re needed.

There is also one especially meaningful opportunity ahead: the committee is looking for families interested in hosting Italian exchange students.

Hosting a student is one of the most personal ways to participate in a Sister City relationship. An exchange isn’t only about showing a young visitor the landmarks of Denver. It’s about everyday life—the family dinner table, school, neighborhoods, conversations and the small experiences that allow someone from another country to understand what living here actually feels like.

And those relationships work both ways. When Denver students travel to Italy, host families in Potenza offer them that same opportunity to experience their city from the inside.

You Don’t Have to Be Italian to Join Us

You don’t need Italian ancestry, you don’t need to speak Italian and you don’t need previous Sister Cities experience to become involved with the Potenza Committee.

You simply need to be curious.

Maybe you’ve traveled to Italy and never quite got it out of your system. Perhaps you’re interested in international education or student exchanges. Maybe you’d enjoy helping organize cultural events, connecting local Italian businesses and organizations, sharing stories, fundraising for student scholarships or welcoming visitors from Italy.

Or perhaps you’d just like to meet some new people.

That’s a perfectly good place to begin.

Become Part of Denver Sister Cities

Getting involved with the Potenza Committee is also a wonderful way to become part of the larger Denver Sister Cities International community. DSCI connects Denver with communities around the world through cultural programs, educational exchanges and the person-to-person relationships at the heart of citizen diplomacy.

If this sounds like a community you’d like to be part of, become a DSCI member.

Membership helps support the work of DSCI and gives you a way to stay connected to events, exchanges and opportunities across all of Denver’s Sister City relationships—not only Potenza.

Sometimes citizen diplomacy begins with an official delegation. Sometimes it begins with a student exchange.

And sometimes it begins by stopping at a table at an Italian festival and saying, “Tell me about Potenza.”
