In October 2025, one of Denver Sister Cities International’s valued partners in Axum faced another devastating setback.

A fire at Aksum University College of Health Sciences (CHS) and Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (AKU Hospital) caused significant damage to facilities, equipment, and critical care infrastructure—further straining a healthcare system already working to recover from the impacts of the 2020–2022 conflict in the Tigray Region.

For a region that has endured years of disruption, loss of equipment, and limited access to replacement supplies, the fire was not just an isolated incident—it was a major setback to ongoing recovery.

A System Under Strain

Hospitals and clinics in Axum and surrounding communities have been operating under extraordinary conditions. These facilities are still rebuilding from earlier damage, relying on limited resources, aging equipment, and the ingenuity of local medical teams to continue serving their communities.

The recent fire at AKU Hospital underscores a larger reality: even as progress is being made—as seen in recent support efforts like equipment delivered to Adiet Semema Primary Hospital this year and to Kidiste Mariam/St. Mary’s Hospital in 2024—needs across the region remain urgent and ongoing.

Why a Container Shipment Is Needed

In response, the DSCI Axum Committee is working with partners to explore the shipment of a full container of medical supplies and equipment to support hospitals in Axum.

Unlike smaller, targeted donations, a container shipment allows for:

  • Scale — delivering large quantities of essential supplies in one coordinated effort
  • Efficiency — reducing cost per item through consolidated shipping
  • Flexibility — equipping multiple facilities based on evolving needs
  • Resilience — helping hospitals rebuild not just for today, but for the future

Items under consideration include hospital beds, diagnostic equipment, sterilization tools, linens, and other critical supplies that are difficult or impossible to source locally.

A Community Response

This effort builds on the strength of long-standing relationships between Denver and Axum—relationships grounded in trust, collaboration, and shared commitment to improving lives.

The need is clear. The partnerships are in place. What comes next is mobilizing the resources to make it happen.

Looking Ahead

As DSCI continues to document and share the events of 2025, stories like this serve as both reflection and call to action. The work in Axum is not finished—and moments like this remind us why sustained engagement matters.

A container of supplies is more than a shipment. It is a tangible expression of solidarity, a bridge between communities, and a direct investment in the health and resilience of our sister city.
