Why Sister Cities Matters

For decades, Denver Sister Cities International has connected Denver residents to communities around the world through cultural exchange, educational partnerships, civic collaboration, humanitarian engagement, and citizen diplomacy.

These relationships create opportunities that extend beyond formal diplomacy. Students experience new cultures through exchange programs. Artists and performers share traditions with new audiences. Civic leaders collaborate across borders. Volunteers organize events, host delegations, and strengthen relationships that continue year after year.

In 2025, DSCI’s volunteer-led committees demonstrated how international friendship and local civic engagement can work together to strengthen Denver’s role as a globally connected city.

Under the Shared Blue Skies

Mongolia and the Rocky Mountain West

One of the most significant initiatives of 2025 was Under the Shared Blue Skies, a three-day international symposium held in Denver that brought together scholars, artists, civic leaders, students, and community members from Mongolia and across North America.

Organized through a partnership between the Ulaanbaatar Committee of Denver Sister Cities International, Metropolitan State University of Denver, the American Center for Mongolian Studies, and the Honorary Consul of Mongolia, the symposium explored shared themes between Mongolia and the Rocky Mountain West — including land stewardship, sustainability, nomadic traditions, culture, education, and civic exchange.

The event welcomed approximately 250 attendees and featured 114 presenters, including 24 international presenters representing universities, organizations, and institutions from Mongolia and across the United States.

Beyond its academic and cultural significance, the symposium also generated measurable civic and economic value for Denver through hotel stays, restaurant activity, transportation, and visitor spending. Estimated direct local spending associated with the symposium exceeded $60,000, with total travel and conference-related investment surpassing $100,000.

More importantly, the symposium demonstrated Denver’s growing role as a place for international dialogue, cultural understanding, and citizen diplomacy — bringing global conversations directly into the local community through volunteer leadership and partnership.
